Deadly Snake Fungal Disease and Lung Parasites Threaten Native Reptile Populations Across the Southeastern United States
Researchers found widespread fungal disease, parasitic lungworms, and multiple co-infections among native snakes in the southeastern United States. Snake fungal disease caused by Ophidiomyces ophidiicola and lungworm infections from Raillietiella orientalis are emerging as major conservation threats, particularly for rattlesnake populations.
